Met with a lactation consultant at Isis today. Oh boy.
First she checked Mina's sucking. She won't take as much of a finger in as she should, which makes her quite inefficient.
Talking over our issues, my milk is at or a bit less than where it should be. This makes sense given our formula use and me not being great about pumping. As fir it taking a while to pump, she suggested renting a hospital grade one. It would be more efficient.
RE Mina's latch/sucking and her chewing on me/ using me as a pacifier. Her guess is it's due to her tiredness paired with bad bottles. The Nuk ones old encourage chewing (to make my nipple shaped like that one). The nipples that come with the Medela are too easy. The ones we got with the hospital formula are super super easy. She suggests new bottles to make her work harder (Medela Calma costs $20, but she gave me 1 to try, Dr Browns newborn or Playtex w drop in bags). She's not a fan of the Breastflow for my issues (leaky and nipple is too short). She also gave me a handout on proper bottle technique.
She's sure that if we make Mina work for the bottle, she'll get better at the breast. And that the Medela Symphony would get me making more milk, and doing it faster.
A lot to think about.
I should have done this weeks ago, and not just before returning to work. Ah well, I'm feeling like our issues make sense now.
