It gets really hot in my office, being an old building and all (I think it used to be housing for traveling nurses at the hospital years ago). So I end up with my windows open.

Today I heard music from the church down the street for the first time. I think it must be the Catholic one on Rt. 60. BELLS! There was music this morning, and they just chimed out the one that goes "Sing a new song onto the Lord, Let your song be sung to Mountains High". That's just really odd, I don't think I've ever heard random church bells at noon on a Friday.

For all the bigotry, patriarchy and anti-gay sentiments/practices in the organization of the Catholic Church, I really miss being *in* church sometimes (especially around Christmas or Easter). I've had so many conflicting thoughts about it this holiday season (and the whole Boston Archdiocese scandal just makes it even more confusing).

my long, long, long post from yesterday called "something missing" has a large portion dealing with going to christmas eve service.

my take on it is that the spirituality of the night is what's important. not deities and sayings, practices and rituals. it's everyone coming together with a single-minded purpose of honour, love, happiness and peace that makes it special. it gives one hope that things might work out alright in the end for everyone.

i'm not catholic, having grown up protestant, but i completely understand what you are feeling. it's disillusionment, but still a wistful feeling towards the church. maybe in a way we just wish it could still feel like it did when we were little and didn't know? not that i want to NOT know... but anyway. that's my take on it.
