I'm hungry
Apr. 18th, 2002 11:47 amI haven't been eating a balanced diet lately - not that I'm eating CRAP, I'm just not getting enough fruits, veggies and water. The thought of my morning grapefruit was painful (I have a couple of canker sores, bit my lip last week a couple of times) so I decided to get a grumbly tummy before lunch instead (noon just can't come fast enough).
Class last night was cool, we watched the second half of a movie that was on PBS a while ago about the current state of health care costs. It was filmed at Beth Israel and it was neat so see some of my old haunts from Simmons days (Longwood Galleria, Kenmore Square, Brookline Ave) in the filming. They even mentioned my company a few times and interviewed our Chief Medical Officer for his opinion of Caregroup's current financial woes. It was interesting - I keep ending up being called on in class to answer questions that my professor has of things just because of where I work and because of the information that I'm privy to.
I got an A on my first paper! I'm thinking I should do well in this class (let's see how I'll handle two of them - one of which being statistics - in the fall).

My husband impulse bought another rabbit! I'm happy about it but shocked all the same! I remember a day when he told me that bunnies were lame and he didn't understand my fascination in them :) His name is "Batty", since he's black and though he's a lop has his ears up with excitement most of the time (like bat wings). We're going to wait a few weeks and keep the buns separate before putting he and Praline together - that way she'll be able to adapt to being without Flopsy and he'll be able to adapt to living with us. He's neutered already and he's only a couple of months older than her so they should be able to live together for a long time . . .

We did some more house drive-bys last night, this time in Malden and Medford - and found one house that we're interested in seeing the inside (its right near Reveeeah, dude)! Its a bit higher in cost than the ones in Framingham but would be way closer to B's work and way easier to hit the T (though the two in Framingham are a 5 minute walk from the commuter rail). We're checking out the two in Framingham on Saturday morning (you can see outside pictures here http://www.diabolis.net/~bunicula/images/house5/ and here http://www.diabolis.net/~bunicula/images/house4/ ). This is the fun part of the process . . . the hard work will start AFTER we get an offer accepted. So now Saturday just has to hurry up and get here!
We didn't make it to VNV Nation last night (figured sleep would be a good thing as well as saving the $40 for tix) so I'd like to get out to goffee and see friends tonight. We're also having dinner with Friends on Sunday and hitting Man Ray and a party (I think) on Saturday - and I really hope to get some beach time in (is any one interested in meeting for dinner and skeeball at Hampton Beach tomorrow night - meeting in NH around 8:00 or 8:30?).
Whew!

Interesting Developments
Apr. 18th, 2002 06:06 pmMy Dad just couldn't understand why we didn't win the bid for that house on the Newton side of Waltham given that we offered the most money AND were preapproved by reputable bank. So he butt his head into something that didn't have much to do with him and called the listing broker.
The listing broker and my dad aren't friends but they've 'heard of' each other before. As usual my Dad gabbed about "how's business" for a while and then cut to the chase - "why didn't my daughter and her husband win the bid for that house when they were offering more money".
I guess the winning bid offered only 5K less then us AND they could put 20% down (rather than our 5%) and our broker goofed and said that we'd want to close in July (not in June) . . . when they received the faxed paperwork from him later in the day they noticed it said June but had already made the decision - sooooooo if he hadn't goofed, we may have gotten the house. I'm not really going to get upset about it after all since it was an honest mistake and I know we'd be "house poor" for a long time if we bought that house since it was the most we'd be able to borrow (and we'd like to avoid being super house poor by borrowing less than that amount, unless its something REALLY special).
Aside from this though, the selling broker was frank and said that he thinks ANYONE will have troubles actually getting the mortgage for this house. Since the electrical system is so old and needs to be completely re-done (we were aware of this) he's doubting the appraisal will be close to the price that the buyers will need to borrow. My Dad suggested I keep my eyes open on realtor.com as this house may be up there again if the deal falls through (or, that the selling broker may actually end up contacting our broker to see if we're still interested).

I'm having such a dilemma with this house thing. I KNOW its way more expensive in the areas that I'd like to live in and I know you get less house and less land for more money. I've never expected a 'dream house' and knew that there would be compromise . . . I just didn't think it would be something as integral to me as the sense of community that I'm used to (I mean jeez, for a while Waltham was the poor scummy town to the surrounding Lincoln, Weston, Lexington, Belmont and Newton).
We'll figure something out. For now, we just keep looking. Hrm . . .
