The Chakra Dance
May. 14th, 2003 08:30 amWe had our first rehearsal for the show last night, basically just walking through the parts of the dance. There are 9 of us in the routine and we'll be each representing one of the 7 chakras (there will be 2 red and 2 purple chakra people). They lined us up by height and I'm located right near the center, I'm yellow (right next to the woman who is the green or heart chakra).
Here's some info on the yellow chakra:

It will be very neat, we'll be doing some veil work early on in the number and the choreography is pretty simple - there are movements that represent each of the chakras. I picked up my skirt and need to find a choli/crop top in white and some kind of coin belt to complete things (the goddesses bought their own veils in all necessary colors that they figured would be good to keep for future performances).
The frustration of not being able to move in my full range of motion is driving me crazy - I felt like I was so stiff last night and just wanted to break loose with all my undulating, shimmying glory. The song we are dancing to is beautiful - its about one of the Hindu Goddesses but I can't remember the name of it now. I have the CD at home to burn a copy of the song for all of the dancers, so I can post that info later on.
Yup, so come see us perform on Saturday night, 6/28 at The Green Street Grill in Central Square (more details will be posted later). Part of me feels excited to be getting dressed up and to be performing doing bellydance for the first time. Another part of me feels like such a peon since I'm such a beginner at this . . . I've been dancing so long that usually I'm a natural to new forms of dance. I think I may have an easier time with some things (since I'm used to moving my body in ways that "normal" people can't) but its still weird to be surrounded by so many talented people where it will take YEARS for me to get to that level.
