Who are the people in your neighborhood?
Nov. 4th, 2008 11:02 amOnce the guys were settled at work and the crowds gone, I walked down to vote. Things of note:
As I was heading in to the school my Mom was coming out, and we stopped to talk a bit about more funeral arrangements for Gram.
As we were standing there the Sutherlands came out of the school (they lived across from us growing up, and their son Mark, his wife and kids moved into the house next door years later).
The local elementary school is hosting a bake sale. The city started doing this at all polling places for elementary schools to benefit the PTO, what a neat idea. A woman I went to HS with was manning the table (her kids go to the school; I've also seen her out in front of my house as a crossing guard). I bought some lemon/anise/walnut cookies to go.
For a city of 60k or so residents, it really is a small town (particularly I think, on the south side). I told the insulator that I'd have to take off tomorrow at around 3:00 for a wake and we got talking about who it was for. I told him my grandmother was a Scafidi and he laughed and said "which one"?!
Sometimes, living in the Watch City is like living in a movie. That's OK by me.
*****
The insulation work continues. Our super-brittle siding is probably going to take a beating from this, but I'd rather have an insulated house (Rob, the business owner told me that its the worst condition he's seen as far as being brittle). Our house was a dark tan color underneath on the original clapboards! The shutters are coming down and not going back up - good riddance horse and buggys! The blower is surprisingly quiet - the hole drilling is making more noise. There's some odd areas where some cellulose has come through (our medicine cabinet upstairs, the drawer our flatware is in). The timing of our cleaning lady coming this week on Friday is perfect, and we didn't even plan it that way. They are concerned about blowing into the den walls, because its think paneling right on studs, so when they do that they'll have a guy inside to keep an eye on it. Our cats are so curious about all of these strange noises and people around the house.
What a neat thing to be around - I'm learning quite a bit. Our house has balloon framing http://www.answers.com/topic/balloon-framing , so we've been losing a lot of air through the walls and floors as a result. Not any more my friend!
