28 Days Later

Nope, didn't like it.
It seemed like the camera techniques were trying to be artsy just for the sake of being artsy. It was a bit gorey but not quite *that* gorey. It was a bit cheezy but not quite *that* cheezy. It made me jump once but wasn't *that* much like a thriller. It had a message in there I guess but didn't put a point to it (like yeah, people are violent/nuts and we all do ourselves in - duh).
We walked out of the theater and B mentioned feeling similar to when we saw Gangs of New York - not really knowing what to think of it. I LOVED Gangs of New York, this one - I'm bummed I used up my free movie passes on it (I didn't even have to pay and was disappointed).
The Boston Phoenix had a review which I guess sums up my take on it: here
I'll just get back to thinking of Johnny Depp and all will be OK :)

Glad I didn't pay for it either...
I loved the Phoenix review's comparison to the 28 day menstrual cycle tho. *heh*

Date: 2003-07-16 07:14 am (UTC)Yeah, like we have a choice in what we do (which the infected didn't).

The title is clever, 28 days, blood, blood every 28 days. The blood-vomit stuff was icky - nothing like the 28 day visitor, though :)

Zombies
Date: 2003-07-16 10:26 am (UTC)That's weird that it would be on DVD in the UK when its still in the theaters here, odd.

See, I loved House of 1000 Corpses - 28 Days Later wasn't cheezy enough, or gory enough or thrilling enough for me (all the things I normally look for in a zombie movie - unless its pirate zombies, and then a sexy Johnny Depp will suffice).
Re: Zombies
Date: 2003-07-16 02:09 pm (UTC)Not really, considering it is a british import. Much the same way that our movies tend to be out on dvd in the US either before or at the same time they hit other countries, movies like 28 days later, Shaolin Soccer (which we also on on dvd) and Johnny English (not yet) are often available in their own countries on dvd before they hit the US market. The disks are coded for their own region though. Which is why UK dvds and Japanese dvds won't play in US machines. Shadow picked up a region free player though, and that will play any region and not just the US, so we don't have to wait for the foriegn dvds to hit the us market before we buy them. We do run the risk of picking up movies with interesting engrish for subtitles. (shaolin soccer is a perfect example of that)
