At some point I'll get to googling, but I figured you are all a bunch of smart people and someone may have a good reference for me :)

I'm looking for information on Lilith. Other than knowing that she was supposedly Adam's second wife after Eve and that some Pagan people consider her a goddess I'm pretty ignorant about her. Does anyone know of good websites with info? I have books at home I could poke in too, but I won't have a ton of time to go reading ancient texts for this.

I picked up The Woman with the Alabaster Jar a while back and never got to read it - I wonder if she's in there, hmm

Thanks in advance!

Why must I lie beneath you?

Not second wife--the first. Lilith was, as Adam, created from the earth. When Adam tried to lord it over her, she split. Not wanting to make that mistake again, God created Eve from Adam's rib, so that she would be beholden to him.

I think this is a good place to start--it reviews a couple of the more scholarly books that discuss Lilith, and includes a snippet from Robert Graves' Hebrew Myths.

i thought the story went that lilith was adam's first wife but she was too strong & so god got rid of her and made eve.

anyway, my friend in brooklyn has been working on a book about lilith for quite a while now. if you're interested i can either put you two in touch or see if he's got an accessible bibliography he could share with you.

As other people have mentioned, she was actually Adam's first wife and too much for him, basically. I think the story is she left Eden to fornicate with the demon hordes. She's a pretty cool character, actually.

There is also a little thing about her wanting to be on top and having an enormous sexual appetite. She was banished from the garden and joined the side of evil and goes around seducing men and eating babies. Or something like that. I'll do some more research and get back to you.

A friend of mine (also in Brooklyn) wrote a paper in her last year of unoversity about Lilith, complete with bibliography. I know she put it online, but I can't find the URL -- would you like me to mail her and get it or ask her to drop by your journal and comment with it?

That would be great :)

I've done that, but I'm still waiting on her response. She's very busy with work so it might be a little while longer, but I'll let you know as soon as she responds.

Thanks :)

Don't kill yourself over it. This is for my dance class next session when I have to pick a goddess (or goddess type character) to choreograph a dance about. After doing a little bit of research I'm not thinking that Lilith is a good fit for me.

Nothing yet, but I'll let you know if I get it anyway. It's an interesting take on Lilith even if you don't end up choosing her.

Have you considered one of the Hindu goddesses? A choreographed dance about one of them could include your interpretation of one of the stories and some traditional Hindu dance. It would be fascinating and look incredible -- plus, think of the amazing costume possibilities! :>

I'll definitely look into it! I was hoping to do a lot of thinking and dancing on it over my winter break but that didn't happen. I need to figure something out soon since my dance classes start again on Monday :)
