dancerjodiOur company does a holiday function on each campus and this afternoon is the one in Malden. We'll be served swanky food by senior management, spend time chatting while we eat it, and then make our way to the dessert area where they had chocolate-dipped strawberries last year (in addition to other goodies).
I usually gain about 5 pounds over the winter and loose it sometime by the spring. My guess is all this weight comes on in December :)
Its so hard to be motivated to work when there are fun things planned for the day or evening. Yesterday most people were goofing off at work as we anticipated going to see "A Christmas Carol". Today we'll have this holiday party from 12-1 or 1:30 and at 3:30 I get to sit at my desk and listen to a Partners Data Group conference call. After that I'll go pick up the hubby and we'll head out to Tapas.

Something in the Urban Tribes book really hit me. He's discussing how he and his tribe members all have massive amounts of free time available to them since they don't have many responsibilities. I know I'm not completely in a group like that (seeing how I'm married, own a house, and have a diabetic cat that gets us up every day at 6:30 for insulin and makes it really difficult for us to go on vacation). I also see my family pretty often and feel a responsibility to them (like say, getting to visit my Gram every week or so). I do still have similar "stresses" in my life to this author. Don't get me wrong, the working full time + grad school thing is tough. When I don't have those things though, I can get overwhelmed about my social calendar. That's just silly :)
I'm looking forward to seeing friends and not running around like chickens with our heads cut off. I need to try to keep things 'real' and not get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season or the doings of "the scene". Taking the time last night to leisurely have dinner and then see something as serious as Dickens was nice. I know the story and all - but it gets to me every time. :)

I guess I'd have free time if I wasn't so busy in engaging in a billion different hobbies plus school and work.

Date: 2003-12-18 08:08 am (UTC)No, he said that they always think they are busy . . . but they don't have true responsibilities beyond work (i.e. they aren't taking care of kids or sick parents or anything like that). I'd lump hobbies or school work into a different category than those.
He gives an example about them stressing out over the days events of brewing some beer, driving a friend to therapy and building a hovercraft. His point is that these aren't "real" responsibilities, only luxuries that he and his friends have to worry about :)
