are coming soon I think (B uploaded the ones from one camera but I don't think he did from both cameras yet or if he did, that pic of me in my green dress didn't come out :/, dammit!)
For reference, here's the costuming pics we had from Dragoncon and what we were hoping to see along the halls at Arisia (and why, we thought that a Tuscan Raider wasn't really a big enough deal for the masquerade):

The Masquerade (screen shots here also of the pre-show i.e. the stuff they put up to amuse use while waiting for it to begin):

Date: 2004-01-19 09:10 am (UTC)That would be Tusken, not Tuscan... I'm not an Italian Raider.
mmmm, pastapeople. Known to lurk around restaurants and attack unsuspecting diners, stealing their forks and fashioning them into crude yet deadly weapons.
Stop it!
Date: 2004-01-19 09:24 am (UTC)OK, you need to cut that out. You're giving me more weird costume ideas (and you saw where that one went with the Bantha) ;)

Date: 2004-01-19 09:20 am (UTC)also, it seemed, the more southern the con, the more costumes. luncacon, imho, was better than arisia, and balticon/philcon were the best for the typical non media cons. dragoncon, worldcon, and costumecon, well, goes without saying. the first two in that list are so involved, huge, and well, big, that arisia can fit in their bathrooms :> hell, even the animeboston con, that's a really good one for costuming.
i'm not in the loop, but i do know that the costuming circuit has been winding down in the literary cons of late. i can only speculate as to why. some of the better costumers move on to the better costume type cons, some have surely con pro and just aren't local now. not enough new blood. things change.
but as i said elsewhere today, dragon*con, yeah, i have to get back to that. rock.
and the dresdens :> i didn't get to see enough of them, but quite good. give a shout if you know when they're local. ust score some cds sometime. i like that the keyboard player has a kurzweil keyboard :> she was really fun to talk to about it as well, definitely a geek somewhat in that respect :) while she was local, she got a tour of the kurzweil facility while they fixed her keys. cool.
Dresden Dolls
Date: 2004-01-19 09:26 am (UTC)Their shows are usually on their website, and also on the gothicboston.org calendar (they have some coming up, and Amanda has some solo nights coming up too).
She's from Lexington :)

Con Costuming
Date: 2004-01-19 09:28 am (UTC)There were some really fabulous threads at Arisia but most were of the Rennie variety. Its something I really love to see, its just not something that I'm used to seeing in such abundance at a con. I think also, I've just been spoiled at Anime Boston and DC :)
Re: Con Costuming
Date: 2004-01-19 09:36 am (UTC)there's also a LOT of serious fetishwear, especially pvc clothing/chainmail from year to year, and corsets. BUTTloads (er, chest loads) of corsets. lordy. that's not exactly rennie/sca for me, but a different ... flavor.
i'm borderline... never got into SCA officially, but i have some clothes, i know some people, went to some events. it's just almost history. hell, cloaks, capes, and ponchos are USEFUL :> the 9 buttons boots, well, they're just too sexy :>
now fantasy stuff. i'm all for that. i need some more costumes. i've done the energizer bunny, and have a "maxx" outfit i made years ago complete with bushy wolf tail (wild things). fortunately, those pack down well :)

have been using the same costumes for years too. she was there, in the nearly exact same setup, when i was a few years ago. so, the really enthusiastic will have whole wardrobes of great and evolving costumes. it's hard to compete with that as a one off costumer (like myself). sigh. i need a storage facility, and a vacuum former :)
the only thing i wonder about: how the HELL can they travel with all that stuff? that alone is amazing :)

Date: 2004-01-19 09:32 am (UTC)Yeah, I can see how if its good and you love the character (and spent time and money on the costume) you'd want to repeat it. Our friend Traci spent so much effort on her Satine Diamonds costume but she usually wears it at cons (and I never tire of seeing it) - she's on the right in this pic: http://www.diabolis.net/albums/conventions/dragoncon2003/hall/?viewmode=browse&lastview=table&file=DSCF0148.jpg

I know a lot of people ship things rather than having to deal with them on planes. People drive to DC lugging everything and the kitchen sink with them. The 501st lists also give suggestions on the best brand and style of luggage to fit a stormtrooper costume in :) The sense of community and sharing amoung con costumers is really fun (of course there are always bad eggs in any bunch, but on the whole it seems like a really supportive group).
