One day Brian and I were in the supermarket trying to figure out what kind of salad dressing to bring to my parent's house. It was my Mom's birthday and the kids were making dinner and presenting her with a photo album with pictures of all of us. I had to pick up a few things for dinner, including salad stuff.
I commented that I would just get some kind of Italian dressing since everyone liked it and we proceeded to find the cheapest one (we're not really gourmets in my family). A random guy walking by overheard us and told us that we just *had* to buy THIS dressing, and he reached over us to grab a bottle of dressing with an illustration of an old lady on it. He raved about how it was the best Italian dressing EVER and that it was put out by a local family restaurant that's been around "forever". I commented that it looked kind of plain since there were no spices in the bottle at all. He told us to trust him.
So we bought it and damn, it was really good dressing! My parents looked at it quizzically but then after they took a bite they remarked how it was strange how good it was. I'd say its probably the best Italian dressing I've had before.
I picked up a bottle to put on my salads at work a couple of weeks ago and just today finally noticed a URL on the back. You can see the history of the family business (first opening a little market, then the restaurant which is down the street from our house and had some pretty decent, basic Italian food). I think you can also order dressing and sauce based on Fanny's classic recipe (one of the founders of the company). I think when we're heading out for Italian food in the future we'll probably end up supporting these guys - there is a similar family atmosphere there to http://www.chateaurestaurant.com/ only the place isn't as large. Which reminds me, I have a gift card for The Chateau to use up - toasted raviolis here I come!
Here is the site (work safe, it not *that* kind of Fanny ;) ) http://www.gofannys.com/ .
