I finally signed us up for a Netflix account. There are so many movies that I've been dying to see and haven't. We end up in the mood to watch a movie only to not have one, and aren't able to find anything good on cable. This is really neat!

The first selections include:
-Donnie Darko
-The Order (thriller/horror type movie with religious overtones, a guilty pleasure of mine)
-League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (yeah, I've heard bad things about this but we still want to see it anyway)

Do you have any suggestions of things that we must put on our list?

They've got all sorts of old TV series on dvd. My queue's up to 275 movies right now, because I rented all of Star Trek and Mad About You and Alias and Dark Angel and and and. Documentaries, too.

Rent some Italian films, they've usually got gorgeous scenery. :)

I love Cinema Paradiso, I must own it! :)

I'm definitely going to paruse them - getting Brian to watch is another story though ;)

If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend The Boondock Saints.

I rented a ton of Jon Woo and other original Hong Kong action flicks as well as random anime when I first got netflix, and that was pretty cool. The single disc that has both el mariachi and desperado (parts 1 and 2 of the Once Upon A Time in Mexico "Trilogy") was nice.

I originally used netflix to get wierd real serious 'film' movies, but then I never watched them cuz I wasn't in the mood. So now I usually try to keep a mix on hand -- one set of a series like the simpsons, two lighter/comedy/stupid hollywood action types and a film film that I really should see. (I get four since I signed up right when netflix came out).

That way i have a few brainless titles at hand, but if I want a real movie I can grab it.

The real trick of course is turn around. If you have a movie for more than a few weeks and you aren't certain you want to watch it soon, I suggest just returning it and re-adding it to your que so you can get something you actually might watch. Otherwise you are sorta wasting the money.

And I loved this movie:

I have loved Netflix so far...we've rented a few random things. My dad is very upset that they don't have the 12 chairs anymore.

Hmm...I suggest:
To Live (A movie about China during the Revolution years)
King of Hearts (A very strange movie set during WWI or II with an asylum break out)
Man of La Mancha
Bend It Like Beckham
Rabbit-Proof Fence
Windtalkers
Hable Con Ella

Interestingly enough most of the films I've put on our list (We did it as a family) are foreign films.

I signed up for netflix last week and I already love it. One thing I like about it is the fact that they have the TV series on DVD. I'd recommend The Sheild with Michael Chiklis (from The Commissioner) - I've watched the first DVD from Season 1 and am hooked and the 2nd DVD should arrive today for my viewing pleasure. I like that if I time things right I'll always have at least one DVD in house to watch.

don't know if it's out on dvd, but "the spirit of 76" is a totally goofy movie. it stars the brothers from the band red kross (not kriss kross), david cassidy, either cheech or chong, moonunit zappa, and several others. it's just soooo silly!

It is, and I just added it to my list of movies to eventually get. Thanks! :)

Loved Donnie Darko. Definitely a mindjob movie. We want to see the other two, so if you want movie buddies, let us know! They are buried in our queue somewhere, but I never watch movies, so hey, you are a motivating factor. :)

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was so terrible it was good. All we could do was mock it through the whole thing.

Movie: How will we ever make it in time?
Tziz: We'll just walk to the other damn end of the boat.

I love netflix. If you like strange, but beautiful movies, might I suggest (if you haven't already seen it) The Cook, the Theif, His Wife, & Her Lover. It was very surreal & beautiful.

... is one of the great Pagan Movies of all time!

It has one of the most satisfying endings ever!

... and Christopher Lee!
