Brian talked with http://www.statewidemoving.com/index.html and got a good rate for them - less than $800 for moving and $130 to store stuff overnight. They give a price guarantee and seem to have a lot of good references on their website.

Once we get confirmation that June 16 is OK we're going to hire these guys. We have enough time to save for moving costs, and if need be (I REALLY don't want to do this) can dip into the credit card.

Now, we just need to sell our weight machine and fridge :)

They've been in business since 1992 and seem to have a clean record--but only ONE employee? How many people are going to be working this move?

Three.

The price is actually consistent with what the Di's paid to move last year - since its a local mover, less distance, less time, less pay. They are also insured (which was what we wanted to make sure of).

Watch out for bargain movers

We went with a mover who gave us a good rate and had good reviews on the web, but instead of them actually showing up, they sent a subcontractor to move us. The subcontrator had different policies about boxes (The one we contracted with gave us three free wardrobe boxes, for example, the one we got wanted to fight over that.) and the subcontrators had variable abilities to speak english.

While things mostly were ok, the subcontractors were sloppy and we were very glad we moved most of the fragile stuff our selves.

They may be fine, just keep a real close eye on them when they turn up to move you!

Actually a friend checked up on them in the BBB (she commented in the LJ entry) and said they've been in business since 1992 and have no complaints - that's a good sign.

Also, they said the rate is guaranteed (we're going to have them come out to give a better estimate, seeing that this one we have was just over the phone based on a room-by-room inventory that Brian gave them).

Also, they quoted us a price over the phone that was VASTLY different than what we ended up paying. We were quite clear about how many rooms and how much storage we had, but they were not prepared for the amount of stuff we had (not enough truck space and not enough movers to get the job done in 1 day).

If possible have them actually come to your house and look at your stuff before you sign with them.

Brian did a room by room inventory with them - but we are going to have them come out and look at our stuff. They guarantee the rate, so what they say will be what we pay (also, things seem to check out with them on the BBB).
