Some progress
Oct. 12th, 2004 08:31 amI'm going to finish those Han shirts, I just need some time away from them. I'll pick them up in November again.
School stuff is moving along. I mailed my prof and told him I was going to do the regular take-home final instead of the research paper. I have to write a quick 1-page jobby today/tonight before class (that will go toward 1/2 of my midterm). I just couldn't bring myself to do it yesterday with the mood I was in, so I choose to read ahead instead. I e-mailed my adviser about the fieldwork paper asking for some guidance for the paper I need to write for that about EMR. Its only got to be 10 pages, and I'm hoping that between a couple of papers I've written already, the material and notes I have from work, and perhaps a few more journal articles I'll have the thing written.
I really needed this holiday. It wasn't what I had hoped it to be, but when I have a little extra time I'm always really crazy about planning the 10 billion things I'm going to cram into that day. It was nice getting Halloween decorations out front, it was nice having dinner with J, and it was nice getting some reading done. And walking - walking was very nice!
B and I were getting restless with bad TV last night so at around 9:00 we decided to go for a walk. We walked down to Moody, up to Main, up Main to Prospect, and back up Prospect back home. There is a new "Jazz Cafe" coffee shop opening soon next to the common that states it will serve French Pastry (I wonder if they will have live music). There are condos galore being put up where 2 and 4 families once stood. A small Mexican market is closed. There is *another* restaurant opening on Moody (they have a building permit on the door, and it mentions something about preparing for a restaurant). Its where an auto parts store used to be for many, many years. Its also next to what used to be Hanlon's shoes (workboot type stuff). There is a shitty Southern California style restaurant there now that serves Starbucks coffee and has free wi-fi. This ain't your Grandma's watch city . . .
Waltham is definitely changing. Progress is nice, its also sad to see other things go. I can tell you though, its nice walking in the dark with your sweetie, watching the moon reflect off of the old Charles River and seeing how it looks shining down on the old Watch Factory. The day that that place is turned into condos or luxury apartments I *will* cry. Its where my grandparents met while making history in the city (making watches) and where years later my Dad would make his fortune running a Graphic Design/Printing business renting a massive office space in the rear of the building that looked out on the river.
There were many walkers out last night . . . its nice to be living somewhere again where people move in their surroundings and don't just hide in their houses, SUVs and shopping malls. We had dinner at the Chateau on Friday, walked down for Indian on Saturday, sat on our front porch on Sunday, and walked everywhere on Monday. I'm really liking actually living where my body lies in sleep (as opposed to making quick stops before running out again to somewhere more exciting).
I will get through today and it will be the middle of the week - one can't complain really! Also, the first series of That 70's Show is coming out in a couple of weeks! October 26! I don't watch much TV but that's my favorite, favorite show. It will be mine!

I doubt they'd tear it down - its in good shape and is huge and totally brick, getting that thing down would be a bitch.
One of the main renters in the place (a company owned by GE) is moving out to a place that has cheaper rent. I hope more companies move in, rather then them emptying the place of businesses and putting condos/apartments in. It has "trendy appeal", having a condo in an old factory building. There is definitely the space. But I think the last thing that this part of the city needs is more condos :)
