Synchronicity
Mar. 8th, 2005 08:44 amLast nights bellydance class was a good one.
We didn't do too much movement beyond 'listen to the music and let it move you', but we did narrow down our ideas collectively into a general theme. At the end I didn't feel like I had gotten a great physical workout, but I was pulled at a mental/spiritual level. Its why I love studing with this group so much.
First we listened to our music, making notes of the pattern (A, BB, CC, DD, EE, A, repeat, ending in an extra E at the very end). The song is pretty even so that's cool (and could make choreography simple, if we want it to be). Then we danced and listened for general themes in the music. Then we danced and listened for more specific things going on (who is there, what are they doing, who is with them). Then we danced again trying to be more specific about the situation we saw in the music. Then we danced, making notes of the moves that kept coming out repeatedly in the music.
Sharing our thoughts, the five women there came to similar conclusions in terms of the story we want to tell, and the moves we want to do it through. Its neat to see that happen, almost like when women that live together tend to end up with similar menstrual cycles. Its neat that this will be OUR dance, and not something just passed down from a teacher.
The theme of our student show (in late June) will be "Circles and Cycles". It should be interesting. I'm pondering whether I also want to do some kind of solo number. I have some ideas that I'll need to experiment with, combining bellydance with tap dance. In many ways I've come full circle in terms of dance, career, and my relationship. It would be appropriate to show this in dance come summer (could there be a more appropriate theme for our performance?).
And tonight, tap and jazz class :)
