I'm going to check them out today and possibly schedule a time to have that put in (with a CD player). Some poking online shows 3 diff ranges: 1000 feet, 1400 feet and 2000 feet. I have no clue what the price differential is for these guys, but, if you have a remote starter:

-Do you have any brand suggestions (to get or avoid)?
-Do you have any range suggestions?

I have no clue how many feet it is from my office to my car but I'm guessing the 1000 would do it. I'm just so bad at judging distances visually though!

my usual rule of thumb applies - buy the most expensive one you're willing to pay for.

the extra distance just means your heat is on that much longer before you get in ;)

But, how do you know how far you are from your car (i.e. how do you know if you hit the button inside of the mall that the car actually was reached?)

I'll ask them all that later - this is why I'm going to Rich's. They aren't the cheapest around but they sell all quality stuff and will do a good job with the car (heck, maybe Joe Perry will be there and I'll get to chat with him too!). I can kill 2 birds with one stone that way :)

I've never had one (as you might imagine they're not quite so necessary down here), but from my experience dealing with various wireless things (not just wi-fi, but in general, things w/o wires ;), I'd suggest going with the farthest range you can get. You'll find that the range numbers they mention are invariably for the "best possible range under ideal conditions" and once you actually start playing with it in the real world, you'll find that the most random things can cause problems or reduce its range considerably.

I'm just guessing here, but I suspect that once you do get it you'll find plenty of opportunities to use it at work, home, visiting family/friends etc... and you might as well get one that will have the best chance of working in most situations (after all, it's not like you'd be able to go back and swap out the system if you found that the shorter range wasn't quite enough when you're at the dance studio, or at a friend's house etc...)

Yes, I'm guessing you don't have to worry about warming up your car so its sitable, and getting ice off the windsheild issue that often! :) I'm looking forward to not having to go out in the morning before work to start the car, and having it all toasty when I leave the office after work (rather than shivering for the first 10 minutes or so). Its definitely decadent and I always said I'd never do this, but I plan on having the car around for a long time and have the unexpected $ to do it, so why not!

Thanks for the wireless tips. That all makes a lot of sense. These things cost A LOT of money, so its all a matter of how much I'm willing to spend (spending $20 on myself is a huge deal, never mind this much)!

My kid brother installs these for Best Buy. Want me to have him get in touch with you? He knows a lot about them, and can help guide you in the right direction. (He'll also know about potential pitfalls with your particular car.)
