I take 2 dance classes a week that will count toward 2 of my workouts. I have a tap/jazz class that actually lasts 3 hours, but there is a lot of standing around, so I'm recording it as 1 hour cardio. I also have a ballet class that lasts about 2 hours.

When recording workouts on the Self site, you can choose activities from a pull down menu. It seems to say that ballet is cardio. The movement, the dancing itself is . . . but the barre work isn't very aerobic at all and is quite the muscle worker. Does it seem reasonable to you guys for me to record this as strength? For a 2 hour class about 1/2 hour of it is barre work and there is a bit of standing around while waiting for turns (in doing turns down the floor), so I figured I'd record it as 1 20 minute strength, one hour of cardio. Does this sound reasonable to people? Anyone with dance experience that it sounds reasonable to?

Thanks in advance! :)

Sounds reasonable to me from the way you describe it.

i was having that issue myself last night after my workout. it's definitely all strength training w/my trainer, not cardio, but there is no way to record that. they even consider weight lifting to be cardio (wtf?).

i'm going to just record those sessions as strength, otherwise it'll look like all i do is cardio when really most of what i do is strength (atm).

thanks for posting about the challenge, again. i'm really motivated to keep up with it!

Well, how high does your perceived heart rate go up when you do the barre? Cause if it doesn't much, and you feel a burn (love that lactic acid) then it's definitely strenght.

cardio vs. strength

"Well, how high does your perceived heart rate go up when you do the barre?"

It doesn't go up at all. It actually takes A LOT to increase my heart rate, (which is why Brian and I can't really do the gym thing together).

"you feel a burn (love that lactic acid) then it's definitely strenght."

Oh, its definitely burny (oftentimes my muscles get to that vibratey point at the barre, and its common to have a few cramps either in my calves or in the arch of my foot at points where there's a lot of repetition in movements and not enough let down). Its so burny in fact, that I'm often sore on Sunday from the workout (in that 'I worked hard' sort of way, not that 'I hurt myself' way) hence, why its such a kick butt class! You'll usually find me walking around the house saying "ow, my butt hurts" and walking veeeery slowly! :)
