House Rambling

dancerjodiAs always, we have a list of things we want to do to make our experiences in the house better. I think there is always a part of my brain that's churing about how to make our small (relative to the last house) space more useable, and more simplified. Reading that "Scaling Down" book really did have a bit impact on me as far as that goes.
I want to get our bathroom sorted out. There is peeling paint to strip, and a sill inside the shower to tile (and then window trim to paint with exterior paint, so it will hold up to the water abuse). Given how small it is in there we've had this tower/organizer thing that's chrome, and since its been next to the sink its starting to get rusty. Either we've got to paint it with some rustoleom (it won't be chromey anymore if we do that) or replace it with something else (I've yet to find something so compact). Its such a silly bathroom, so I'm usually thinking of ways to improve it when I'm there in the shower.
We've been pondering changing rooms around, and moving our bedroom to the front of the house (larger room, bow windows) and moving the craft room stuff into what's now our bedroom. The problem is, figuring out how to fit stuff now that we've built a closet in there. I'm so settled and comfy in our bedroom, but Brian and I both keep having thoughts that moving to the larger one would be better. Time will tell. We need time to measure, ponder, and plan.
We've needed to build a cover for the radiator in the den, and this morning I was wondering if we should have shelves line that part of the wall above the radiator cover (the width of the radiator) - we could stain the whole kit and caboodle the same finish that the other shelves in that room are. In the remaining naked wall space (on the right, directly when you walk in the room) I could hang my Bob Fosse print to go with the "Keep on Dancing" print that's already on that wall. It would provide more space, perhaps may let us rid ourselves of the cheapie particleboard DVD shelf (who knows, I've wondered if we should get nice looking cases to put the disks and booklets and actually lose all of the individual cases - they could live on the new shelves) and may free up space for a small chair to sit there permanently (rather than a folding one we have behind the door for when guests are over).
I'm enjoying gradually clearing out the cheap furniture for nicer, more permanent, more simplified stuff. I guess the progress that Brian's made in his office is definitely inspiring. I love having a place we can tinker with!
As far as the outside of the house goes, Brian will be off at trooping at Free Comic Book Day on Saturday and I'll be free between ballet class and a 4:00 memorial mass for my old dance teacher. If the weather allows, I may pick up some flowers to stick in the ground in the little strip of land to the right of our driveway. I also have to get off my butt and call my cousin (the landscaper) about getting a Lilac planted in our back yard - Brian's getting me one for my birthday. :)
Of course, we've totally gone off course from scraping and painting our porches. And getting the attic, basement and garage into order. Eventually!

Date: 2006-05-04 01:17 pm (UTC)I don't know if you've ever seen the corner wire organizer in my shower, but they are really quite roomy AND compact. They have ones for shower stalls that go from floor to ceiling, so that would make a very compact and useful shelf in a small bathroom. The trick is to find a heavier-duty one than many of the chintzy ones out there.

It seems as though you need more space, though, in your craft room and office. After all, what do you really do in your bedroom that does not require a bed? The ideal setup is to use the bedroom for sleep and sex, and nothing else. So you don't really need space, you know? But you two have so many crafty/geeky things going on, that it seems THOSE activities require space... after all, the craft room is probably brighter, and it's probably nicer to sew in a more airy room.
