My parents are in the process of converting their house to a two family (apartments, not condos). Their plan is to move out and rent the downstairs unit out (my brother will stay upstairs with some roommates) and then they'll move into Gram's house down the street. She's in a nursing home and the house is in great disrepair, and couldn't be sold or rented in its current state. They'll live there while Dad works on it - his estimate is that it needs 80k or so of work before something happens with it.

As such, they've been in the process of doing their own scaling down. They've been trying to pawn things off on my sister and I, have been throwing a ton of things out, and are packing things up for storage that will eventually end up in wherever they end up permanently settling. They are hoping its a house on a swimable body of water in the lakeish region of NH. They don't want to be in a touristy central location like Winnipesaki, but they want to be in that general part of the state. I decided to find the family photos today, since we were there for nephew's birthday and I had been wanting to scan some old dance studio photos. Dad helped me to unearth 4 boxes, and there is a 5th somewhere yet to be determined. We spent some time looking over things, and its amazing how many pictures my parents used to take!

I'll be storing them for them for the time being, but I'm also taking on the project of organizing them. There are a ton of duplicates, poor pictures that are unrecognizable that should just be tossed, a ton that never made it out of their paper envelopes from developing. There are albums older than me that aren't acid free that have fading polaroids stored in them. My plan is to weed through them all, sort and organize them (and toss the junk) and then store them in a way that makes sense for browsing, and will be safe for longevity. I'll buy a scanner at some point too, and scan things for peeps.

Because you know, I needed another project!

In all seriousness, I'm having fun with it. I had forgotten about a lot of things that these photos have served to remind me.

Can anyone suggest some good stackable photo boxes that aren't too expensive, but would look nice if displayed later on a shelf? I'd want them to be acid free and all that, and have a slot in the front to insert a label. I've seen them at AC Moore, The Container Store and Ikea . . . I'm just curious if any of you have any favorites.

"No, but I can suggest a nice corner of NH. My parents live in Washington. It has lots of lakes and it still feels like new england. It is between Sunapee and Hillsboro."

Thanks for the suggestion! I forwarded it to my Dad, and he said they've checked that area out, but wanted me to thank you for passing on someone's personal experience. :)
