We're back! I'll post a link with pics later when they are all loaded (there are some on our little camera that still haven't been put up).
We arrived without incident, and after checking in and killing some time checked out the Georgia Aquarium. So neat! I loved the Whale Sharks and Beluga Whales and little hammerheads that you could pet. The place didn't have as many different fish as I was expecting, but what they had was awesome! We spent the night people watching and socializing in the Hyatt.
Friday was primarily our panel day. We caught the first Ghosthunters and Serenity panels, watched the costume contest on TV in a hotel room, and after the big Voltaire concert in Regency caught the end of the Colonial Day shindig - drunk Galactica celebrities are funny! As expected, more people watching and socializing in the Hyatt continued.
Saturday was primarily Star Wars day. The 501st group photo and parade was in the AM - I was the only female Tusken in the group (though there was another roaming around the con over the weekend). Post parade I changed for the other Ghosthunters panel (the first panel was with Brian and Steve - the second with Jason and Grant). After lunch with my brother we headed to take the group Mandalorian photo and the 'Ton of Slave Leias on Jabba' photos. I suited up into the Sith cheerleader, went to the 501st mixer, and post changing into a casual bellydance outfit hit the Dawn contest. We weren't thrilled with the PM concerts (Ego Likeness and Cruxshadows) and spent time wandering around people watching again. I met one of Tiggerette's friends from NOLA, hit the Buffy Prom and had silly dancing, and got checked out by a drunk Ghosthunter. Cool TAPS story of the weekend - Brian Harnois used to be a member of the NEG and he hung with us off and on over the weekend. He's hoping to join the group again time permitting (he's got a baby on the way, due in November). All in all the TAPS guys were very nice, and I bought one of their magazines that they all signed - but I digress. More people watching, Hyatt Bar hanging out. Lather, rinse, repeat.
By Sunday afternoon Brian and I were starting to get kind of bored and annoyed with the crazy crowds. This year seemed similar to the James Marster's year (our first) as far as attendees went, but con security seemed less prepared to deal with it. They were also quite rude, and many seemed to have inflated egos. We hit a Mythbusters panel and wandered around until splitting off for The Cantina Ball (Brian - where there was a slave leia belly dancer) and to watch the Masquerade in a hotel room (me). Post the ball we headed down to Dunwoody to see some footage of http://www.heartofanempire.com/ - so neat! It is due to be finished by 9/11 (ironically) and they are hoping to get it into the Sundance Festival. It will be available for release some time in early 2007. Very neat! I had planned on dressing up for shows and dances on Sunday night but just didn't care by that point, and we did more of the people watching/socializing in the Hyatt Lobby until RHPS was due to start. Lame! It was the same emcee as past years, wearing the same thing, doing the same thing (including the preshow). We didn't even last until the preshow started. The group of us that was still remaining headed to the Marriott Lobby to lounge on sone couches on the Garden Level behind the elevators. There were a group of drunk con-goers riding the same glass elevator up and down and up and down and up. We watched them for a bit, and EJ made some "show us your tits" signs, causing us to be flashed with some man boobs. The group eventually split at around 2:30 AM or so, there just wasn't anything going on.
Brian and I flew out late for us for DC - 4:30 PM - so we got to catch some of the robot wars yesterday which was really neat. Our flight was uneventful but cheap ass Air Tran not having its own gate had to taxi the runway for 20 minutes before we could deplane. Then it took a 1/2 hour or so for our luggage to start coming (at least we got it all, phew). Our cab driver was nuts, and kept weaving traffic and speeding. It was SO nice to get home and see our fuzzy kids, have a late dinner, and settle back into normal. I'll be doing 6-7 loads of laundry today and trying to get used to a world where there aren't costumed characters and half naked people everywhere.
As far as purchases, I picked up a couple of non SW shirts which I needed (a Browncoats, a Voltaire and a Ghosthunters). Brian and I purchased our first stuff from the Art Show - a really neat piece from http://castpaper.com/ of a thistle - framed for our bedroom wall. We also ordered a print that will be shipped from another artist - I don't have her name handy but I'll share it later. It will hang in our kitchen, kind of a art nouveax style woman in blacks, reds, browns and yellows. I picked up the new live Voltaire CD (its got the SW Cantina song on it, and his bantering between songs) and a Cruxshadows single for Tiamatlady. We also bought the Serenity 'Done the Impossible' DVD documentary about the fan base and how the browncoats helped get the movie made.
Brian and I did have a lot of fun, and it was really great to see friends we only see at DC, and to meet some people we've chatted with online. The programming hasn't differed much from year to year though, the eye candy though interesting isn't anything we need to see or be around. We're not drinkers, so the whole standing in the Hyatt Bar for hours thing isn't exciting. The crowds just get worse and worse each year. Given that we haven't done a ton of travel to new places, we're going to be saving our time and money for other trips, and won't be hitting DragonCon again. It has been an exciting four years though! :) I'm glad that the NEG newbies had a great time, and I'm sure they will next year when they all go again without us. Its the circle of geeks - or something!

Date: 2006-09-05 04:32 pm (UTC)me love you long time. ;-)
I can see how you feel that way. SO many people, so little sense. It's really the same no matter what and where you go - Leipzig was indeed just that. Little M and I were very careful not to overdo, and made sure we saw what was absolutely important to us (Killing Miranda and Fields of Masada for him, Beborn Beton and The Last Dance for me) and it's hard to watch the rest of the people get crazy, since we're just not on that boat with them.
I'm hoping the Cruxshadows don't do the con next year - I'd actually like to see them at some point up here, and like you said, that's getting very stale.
I will need to pop by and "borrow" those CDs I don't have, until I'm able to buy them. I think Voltaire is in RO later this month, so it won't be too much of an issue.
Thanks again for getting the CD - I'm sure they were crazy busy!
