dancerjodiOur jazz routine is moving along. I'll actually be choreographing the step for "Group C" (yes Katie, that's you!) who are the more advanced students, though the entire class will be learning it. Choreography is so not my strong suit. I spent some time after class last night listening to the song over and over again. Then I read the lyrics to my portion (a measly 32 counts - I should be able to handle this). Then I copied down the lyrics and thought of moves that may go with them (not much of anything). Here's our little section:
"Wo - oh - oh - oh - oh
Once upon a time I used to dress up Ken
But now that I'm a woman, I like bigger men
And I don't need a Barbie doll to show me how
'Cause mama, I'm a big girl now "
The song is from the musical Hairspray, of which I've seen neither the recent remake or the original (they are in my Netflix list). I spent some time looking at video clips on Youtube of performances of and from the show to get an idea of the feel of it. Bouncy, Mowtownish kind of 60s stuff and I made notes of common themes (lots of flailing arms, mostly). Then I looked at a bunch of sites listing jazz steps. I've been taking jazz forever, but when I'm put in a spot where I need th choreography I kind of clam up and just remember a couple of basic things. I made a note on my paper of things I like, things that we don't do often, and things that may lend themselves to the music.
And then I choreographed sitting on my butt under a blanket in the den. I was able to hammer out the 32 counts in not a lot of time on paper. Of course, I'll have to get up and actually try the steps to see how they work out. My goal is to get something in there that fits with the routine but also shakes it up a bit. There's some irony in there too - some 'spirit fingers' and some arms from the 'Jive Bunny' routine that we've done 100 times that some friends in class were joking about last night (paired with some more complicated feet though).
I'll let you know how it turns out! :)
