This is promising . We have gas heat, and I've been wondering how the prices would go given what's happening with oil.

We have been keeping the house cooler than we normally do, and even Brian was having a hard time with it (I'm always cold, so I figured I'd be the only one to have to suck it up). We had friends over on Saturday and we did jack it up a couple of degrees. I don't mind putting slippers, hoodies and blankets on but I don't want my guests to have to.

We do have a programmable thermostat but we haven't messed with it because we have single pipe steam heat:

"For steam heating and radiant floor heating systems, the problem is their slow response time: both types of systems may have a response time of several hours. This leads some people to suggest that setback is inappropriate for these systems. However, some manufacturers now offer thermostats that track the performance of your heating system to determine when to turn it on in order to achieve comfortable temperatures at your programmed time.

Alternately, a normal programmable thermostat can be set to begin its cool down well before you leave or go to bed and return to its regular temperature two or three hours before you wake up or return home. This may require some guesswork at first, but with a little trial and error you can still save energy while maintaining a comfortable home."

Perhaps its something we should play with? Lots of good info here by the way (source for the above blurb):

Oil will be FIFTY PERCENT higher???? Ouch Ouch Ouch!

Luckily, some years ago I switched to gas. It was winter, my oil level was getting to 1/4, I called the company to deliver. Week later, my level is nearly in the red. I call, they say they DID come. Well, not according to my level. Please come and really do it. A week goes by, I'm in the red, and we have a major snowstorm coming in. I call and freak at them.

They send someone out. At 11:00 pm at night on a Saturday. Does he bring oil? No, he looks at my level, calls in to the office and says "She's got enough to last a few days." Hmmm, they sell oil. I want to buy it. This should be a win-win situation. The next month I switched. And told them why.

I can't stand anything below 70 myself. What's your magic number? Glad to hear the gas prices won't be too crazy for us this year.
