It makes sense given how sewing is less and less popular and how the economy is going. Oftentimes its much cheaper to buy a garment than make it (at least, with these kinds of prices compared to what you'd pay in the old Chinatown stores or in NYC).

No more knitter's breakfasts! No more super-discounted fabric lengths.

Damn.

I'm a bit sad about that, but to be honest I'm part of the problem--it's easier to order from fabric.com or distinctivefabrics.com or spandexhouse and know that I will not be wasting my time driving out somewhere only to discover that they don't have what I'm looking for, or have enough of it.

OTOH I do love browsing somewhere like Winmill Fabrics, where you never know what you will find.

Damn! I can not get the hang of shopping for tactile items like yarn or fabric online. I need to see and touch to decide. There is also something about wandering aimlessly for hours just looking. I don't like Joann's as much since they tend to have cheaper quality fabrics once you get beyond the standard quilting cotton and they aren't ask convenient to me. The Woburn store is right across the street (sort of) from work. I do know of a couple smaller local stores, but the hours they are open are not as condusive to shopping with my work schedule. Bummer.

I agree - I can't buy fabric online, even when they send swatches. Swatches are too small to know how a fabric will drape, how heavy a garment will be, how it will cover the body, or how it will feel next to the skin as a skirt or a shirt or a dress. Joann's is nice; I do buy a good amount of material from them, but, since it's a chain, the stores all tend to have the same stuff no matter which one you go to. Fabric Place was a great alternative place to get more variety for wool suitings and upholstery fabrics.

There are two places I go to in Cambridge, but they are much smaller and do not have the variety, especially in terms of quilting fabrics.

OMGWTF WHAT?!?!?!? I go there for SO MUCH of my fabrics!! And now they'll be gone??? GAAAAAAH *sob*

I JUST got on their discount card/coupon mailing list, too. ARGH. I'm really upset by this - I loved that store. Any idea when they're finally due to shut down?

I guess I'd better go pick out my supplies for my next couple of cosplays sooner rather than later :(

They should be open for a bit at least (the article in the local paper said that Fabric Place closes "by November"), so if you get there soon I'm sure you'll find something for Halloween. :)
