I agree - I can't buy fabric online, even when they send swatches. Swatches are too small to know how a fabric will drape, how heavy a garment will be, how it will cover the body, or how it will feel next to the skin as a skirt or a shirt or a dress. Joann's is nice; I do buy a good amount of material from them, but, since it's a chain, the stores all tend to have the same stuff no matter which one you go to. Fabric Place was a great alternative place to get more variety for wool suitings and upholstery fabrics.

There are two places I go to in Cambridge, but they are much smaller and do not have the variety, especially in terms of quilting fabrics.
