I had posted an update about a month or so after insulating our house, but here's another:

Nov 07 therms: 197
Nov 08 therms: 124

Dec 07 therms: 329
Dec 08 therms: 162*

*OMFG!

I'm debating whether to stick with balanced billing because its going to take a while for them to adjust things down and lower our monthly payment. If we switch to useage billing the impact would hit right now, but its harder to budget that way. I am on top of the budgeting though. We're entering our time of highest typical useage (Jan and Feb). What would you do?

I'd suggest you switch now, and use last year's number as your budget number. You're sure to be beneath that, and the extra can be thrown at something or saved (like for Italy!) You don't want them to have an interest free loan!

(and WOW on the usage! I'd like to look at those new strips you have next time I'm over, I'm considering one for the living room and the DVR, or hopefully at some point a media PC)

It turns out we have a $1000 credit on the account for overpaying. I canceled the balanced billing, divided the $1k by 12, and am subtracting $80 per month off what I've been budgeting. I won't have another bill due until that credit is used up either. :)

Holy.......Wow.

Good idea on the budgeting, that should effectively bring down the amounts to where you're really paying. And socking away what you would have been paying gives you another $1000 somewhere savings wise.

I'm glad we don't pay for heat. Electric is pretty bad though, especially the last two months with my laptop and tv running more often. :)

Wow! Nice little unexpected bonus there! It is sort of crazy that they let you get that far ahead, though.

i would keep those bills for data to show prospective buyers if you ever decide to sell your house. unbelievable!
