I have not had cable for over 7 years. It started out as not being able to afford it, but now it just feels natural not to have it.
Recently I got a Netflix subscription, but before that I would watch news on the network website (local news site varied depending on where I was living at the time), get weather reports from weather.com, had a library card (some libraries have a lot of movies miniseries and even shows), and a membership at the local video store. I also read and play videogames for entertainment, so there'd be little leisure time for TV anyway.
Mainstream (read:reality) shows have never interested me, and shows I do like I am content to wait until they are available on the web or DVD. I have also never been the type of person who puts television on as background noise. That's what music is for!
