Brian and I had decided to split the weekend up for BCC this year. He had a weekend pass and went alone on Saturday, and we went as a family on Sunday (Mina is still young enough to be free). We bought our passes but both 'trooped' in an official capacity for the 501st. The SW groups had a trash compactor w/ Dianoga setup and an action figure packaging backdrop for photos. It was nice to see something new, and the crowd seemed excited about it.

It is so much fun to enter this fantasy world for a day and see the creativity that abounds our nerd community. It is amazing to watch Mina growing up in this, and see the wonder in her eyes and also the comfort she has with these characters. She commented about how some people didn't have great quality costumes (!) and that a friend of ours was in a Boba Fett costume, but usually is dressed like Judge Dredd (!).

The crowds were crazy like last year (maybe bigger) but they seemed to have a bigger handle on the lines getting in and around. We did pay for a photo-op with John Barrowman, and though the line and photo went smoothly, the printing of the photos did not. We lucked out getting ours around 5:00 after a 2:00 shoot, but many people left Sunday with no photo. It wasn't the convention's fault, but the company managing that process. It would be nice to see this move somewhere bigger - the Boston Convention Center, maybe?

The next con is Granitecon in NH in mid-September, which we always look forward to. Brian and I plan to do an overnight without Mina pending babysitting for RI Comicon on 11/1.

It's weird. I'm sort of wary of raising Bram up in any sort of 'geek' tribe, whether it's costuming or the professional writing circles I've been running in. Not necessarily because I'm ashamed of it or anything like that, but I want to make sure that he's exposed to it in addition to a lot of other things outside of Fandom.

I can appreciate not wanting to 'brainwash'. I figure, it's rare that we go to these things out of 52 weekends in a year. She's going to take dance classes too. Part of course because I did, but she seems to really enjoy it (dancing/singing around the house on her own). She asks to go up to the studio often and I've told her we'll go back next month. Of course, that could be the big basket of lollipops talking, too. :)

I am trying to introduce her to things that aren't my strong suit as we go. I also hope that she gets some exposure from school.

We are already seeming to come up against that 'girls don't like boys things' at school. It isn't a problem, but the older boys in the preschool room comment how odd it is that she's a girl, a young one at that, and she knows and likes comic characters or Star Wars or whatever. She'll move into that classroom this fall, and so we'll see how that goes. Her peers in the toddler room don't seem to be very aware or vocal about any of this.

I've wondered about that. I've been reading books to Bram (and making a point to read stories about girls as well), and he's certainly going to be exposed to a lot of geek stuff as he grows up. Brainwashing is a good term, and in general, I'm resistant to the idea that someone should be fully, 100% invested in any community or group, because that tends to cut you off from other things. I can't imagine writing fiction without doing work here at Norwich or being interested in Geology, for example.

And, it's awesome for Mina to be interested in comic books and Star Wars. I can't wait to see if she'll get a tiny stormtrooper outfit to show the boys up!
