Dammit! Whenever I print articles from http://www.jstor.org/ it takes forever (whether its from home or work). I haven't tried it from school because I don't want to have to pay the library for the printouts.

Seriously, a 12 page document took around 10 minutes to print, yikes!

I'm concerned I won't have enough sources for my lit review for the Master's paper. I don't want to go to the library on Sunday morning but it may just come to that . . .

are there a lot of graphics in the document or very small print (or unusual characters)? with a lot of the astronomy journals here, it can take up to 5 minutes to print one double sided page on a lazer printer. it's got to do with the fact that the printer has to process all the text and images and turn it into a postscript file before it will print.

i don't know if that helps, but just wanted to let you know we have that problem here as well.

Sometimes there are very simple black and white line graphs, sometimes tables. I think its just the crappy internet connection.

Ah well, its just annoying to have to take a lot of time to print (on top of reading) :)

Thanks for the sympathy - its nice to know I'm not alone!

I have never had a good time using JSTOR stuff...never seems to want to work for me.

You will have enough resources, its just hard to find them. I have that same feeling in the back of my head, but then today realized that I can include a bunch of books on various topics. Can't you access the databases and such online at home?

Yep, or work. Not all of them are on-line though. I have a ton of articles that I have to pull down from microfiche or printed journals today (you know, those fun 7th and 8th floors in the library - the 1/2 floors).

I can't say that I'll miss library research when I'm done with grad school :)

true...Most of mine are either online or aren't at the library. Need to ILL them. Microfiche...bane of my existance.

The half floors freak me out totally. Were you at the library at 1:30 ish? Cause I was down at the computer banks

I like them, though that's where I find most of my info. I prefer them to say, sitting with the Microfiche :)

I actually took the spiral staircases up and down yesterday . . . I kept hitting my steel-toes on the front of the stairs, making a lot of noise and feeling bad for people studying (since the 6th floor is a quiet area).

Nope. On Wednesdays I work a full day so I get out of here at 4:00 and to UMB at 5:00. My class isn't until 7:00 so I was in the library copying and microficheing from 5 till about 6:30.

At some point I'll find you :)

From a quick look at the demo, they offer the options to download the files in tiff, ps or pdf format. Can you try the same page in each of those to see which is faster? My guess would be PDF, but your printer(s) may be optimised for different file formats.
Also, try downloading them and printing instead of printing from the site, and then setting your print options: look for an economy/normal versus high quality setting and b&w versus greyscale if you just need to be able to read it rather than have it be super high quality.

That's how I'm doing them (both from home and work).

I thought that my printer at home may have been the culprit. We were thinking it 'got tired' because the first batch of articles would be fine while subsequent ones were very slow (long pauses between pages). I have a super-cool laser printer at work though and its having the same issues. I'm wondering if its Jstor . . .

I did try downloading them at home as PDFs and unfortunately it didn't make it any faster (I did this because after finding tons of articles by searching for hours and then flagging them for printing I got impatient, closed a bunch of open windows and closed the main Jstor one by accident, ouch! I had to go through my history and find all of those articles again - not fun).

Thanks for the tips! I'll try different formats at some point, if it saves me some time it will be worth it :)

I always download the "fax-quality" PDFs and then when they're on the hard drive print as needed. But printing is still slow, nonetheless. Of course then you can always read them on the screen if you can stand it.

Thanks for the tip! You (of all people) would be well versed in this :)

Nah, I stare at a computer all day that I like to get away from them when I can. I also like being able to highlight and make notes so that when I'm writing my paper I can find the info easily.

I've always had better luck cutting and pasting into a word document and printing like that. I lose pictures and such tho, so that may not be an option for you.

Yeah, I need the statistical tables that are in the articles (and they don't tend to copy well, if at all).

Thanks for the advice though - if I have a shortish article that doesn't have any images in it that may just do the trick! :)
