House looking, a nice dinner, a dead alternator and some cat piss for good measure!
We went to look at the West Newton house last night. It was cute, without getting chatty - we could see why it was only priced at $360k. Given that we don't have a buyer for our place, its not in Waltham, and there were some funky things about it we decided to pass on making an offer. We didn't end up looking at the North Waltham house; I guess it was under agreement already, then that fell through, then the seller decided not to sell. It was really underpriced, so I wonder if they're going to wait a bit and just get another realtor.
A few people called our realtor about our house with some interest in it, so he said we should have a "busy weekend". One guy was an artist, and was interested in if he could use a room there as a studio. Sure my realtor said! The high ceilings, large rooms and lighting definitely help. My guess is that he'd be excited about the colorful rooms and the paintings of my Dad's that are scattered around. Another person called, a broker, and asked "what is the basement like?". Our broker answered "uh, its a basement" - like, what are you supposed to say? The buyer's broker asked if it got flooding or anything and our realtor said he wasn't sure but didn't think so (we don't, btw). He told them that Brian was a big geek and had a computer running down there that "controlled the house", so he guessed water wasn't a problem. The buyer's broker seemed excited with that answer.
Then the good and the suck. After house looking we headed to Belmont to have nice dinner with Tiggerette and Developer - multiple course, with china, way overboard dinner :) They are way too good to us! After chatting for a while we headed out only to find my car dead! The battery was gone (though lights weren't left on or anything). After Developer so nicely gave us a jump, and we let it run a bit it completely died after I turned the lights out - alternator, great. AAA came to take it and towed it to Saturn, Developer and Tiggerette drove us back to Waltham, Brian drove us home in his truck, and he has the lovely task of driving me to and from work today (Framingham - Malden - Waltham in AM, Waltham - Malden - Framingham in PM).
And Brian joked: "You know how much easier this would be if we lived in Waltham?"
I have to call Saturn though they haven't answered the phone yet (despite supposedly opening a 1/2 hour ago). I had an appointment scheduled for Saturday so it looks like the car will be there a little earlier.
Oh yeah, and after the car fiasco we fell into bed, its around midnight and we're exhausted. We're talking about how the home selling/buying process will be stressful but we'll deal. The cat comes and snuggles with us and we get all schmoopy about him. And what does Max do? He pees on us! His litter box was dirtier than he liked and that was the only way he could tell us. Heh! We changed sheets, comforter, etc.
Tonight I want to have a nice dinner with Brian and just chill at home (while we spend the night washing sheets, blankets, mattress covers and comforters).
Thank God its Friday!

cars and cat piss
Date: 2004-04-09 05:15 am (UTC)... and the cat piss ... the box must've been really bad for him to climb into bed (and cats know when their humans are particularly tired and wretched) and piss there. damn. I remember when Persephone (the wife) was on the eve of her year long stint to Japan we were having a mushy evening at home when Aleister (the cat) begins to act oddly. He's crouched on some pillows and glaring at us -somewhat defiantly-. "Is he peeing?, It looks like he's peeing!" I go and pick him up, and lo and behold: he's peeing & he's not stopping. Cat pee fountain all over the oriental and pillows (and me).
I think he was stressed about the up-coming change.
So, I don't know, carry on and be well.
(however, I do love cat stories!)
Re: cars and cat piss
Date: 2004-04-09 05:24 am (UTC)Yikes! Thankfully *knocks on wood* I haven't had a car catch on fire. For a long time I was the queen of the piece of shit car so I guess it helps when I have problems that most times I know what they are. Thankfully, this is the first time this car has needed a tow in the 3 or so years since I've ahd it :)
"... and the cat piss ... the box must've been really bad for him to climb into bed"
Nah, he's just picky. He's had consistent pee problems (we had to get a special box with special litter and change it twice a week for him). Also, he doesn't like to touch the litter so he'll balance 2 feet on top of the box, and won't cover anything up. He had done something in there, hadn't covered it up, we hadn't shaken the box around to cover it up . . . so he was annoyed.
He's 17, diabetic, asthmatic and has a heart murmur but he's our baby, so we humor him (and keep a waterproof mattress pad on the bed) :)
"Cat pee fountain all over the oriental and pillows (and me)."
Yes, I love that definant look that they get when they do it. Its like "oh yeah? mess with me will you? well take that!".
"I think he was stressed about the up-coming change."
I know Max knows that something is going on with our stresses lately, the fact that we're not home a lot (need to stay away when people are looking at the house) and that all these strangers have been walking around in his house! I hope that the eventual move isn't too tough on him. He had a really hard time when we moved to Framingham and immediately gutted the whole inside of the house - he hid in our bedroom walk-in closet the whole time. Wherever we're going, we won't be buying a place that needs that much work so there should only be one room at a time (if any) that's not cat friendly.
"So, I don't know, carry on and be well."
Thanks! We'll be fine. If life was never a challenge it would get pretty boring (and we wouldn't have any accomplishments to show).
"however, I do love cat stories!"
Oh I have so many of them. Cats are such interesting (and neurotic) creatures - but I love them just the same (and sometimes actually *for* that reason too)!
Re: cars and cat piss
Date: 2004-04-09 08:51 am (UTC)heh. that reminds me of Skaven's "I had THREE cars of mine set themselves on fire" stories.
And yes, his luck with cars is improving. Slowly. :)

(good luck with the weekend showings!)
Cats
Date: 2004-04-09 05:26 am (UTC)At that point last night Brian and I just lost it and were maniaclly laughing as we stripped the bed, put new sheets on, stuffed the dirty ones in laundry baskets, found a place to hide them (in case anyone came to look at our house today), changed the litter box and got into bed.
Sometimes a cat can really put things in perspective :)

Date: 2004-04-09 05:41 am (UTC)Exactly. What did you two think you were doing, spending all this time for yourself and the house away from him? He is your lord and master, dammit. Take that!
Nothing like being peed into submission. :P
He is now part of my photography portfolio. Batty, too!
Kitties
Date: 2004-04-09 06:03 am (UTC)Yes, its a powerful weapon and he knows how to use it :)
"He is now part of my photography portfolio. Batty, too!"
Awesome! I'll have to check the specific pictures out.
Given everything we won't be out for South Parking, but I think we'll be making it to the Saints and Sinners Par-tay, so I'll see you there!
Re: Max
Date: 2004-04-09 06:10 am (UTC)Alternator
Date: 2004-04-09 07:06 am (UTC)I've lost 2. Both times I was on the highway to the Cape, before symptoms became clear. Slow windows, weird behaviour. I remember driving home, and slowly losing EVERYTHING in my car, due to power issues. When I lost ABS, THAT'S when I gave in and pulled over. D had to come get me in Hanover, and I had to borrow my sister's car in the morning to go call AAA, to tow it to Saturn.
They're not cheap, I remember $200 plus. But, that's it and it's nothing you did, BUT it will happen again, I'm afraid. THey can take care of it pretty quick, but it being Friday you might need to tear over there to get it, unless you manage to get it tomorrow.
*BIG hugs* it's a scary thing. I'm glad you weren't driving.

Is it a warranty thing? I still have my warranty for another 2000 miles.
*crosses fingers*
At least I have a coupon for that 90,000 mile tuneup :)
Re: Alternator
Date: 2004-04-09 08:05 am (UTC)YAY for warrantees
And I love their coupons.
Althought I need brakes AND the 60,000 tune up - and can only use one coupon. IF the car survives the Triage - I might be making the hard choice and trading it in on a new-used, I'm dropping into gears, it needs front brakes, a major tune, a muffler, and I have coolant issues that are far too expensive to address. IF it's only brakes, tuneup and muffler, I'm doing it. Anything else - *sighs*
Anyway - yay for warrantees!
Huggles
Date: 2004-04-09 11:48 am (UTC)I'm so sorry you had to come home and still have more to deal with. *hugs for you!!* Developer and I kept the phone on, just in case. We felt so bad.
"They are way too good to us!" You guys are special friends and I like to try and show that. You deserve it! *gives you great big ole hug* Next time though, we can just do pizza and watch cheesy movies, or walk about the cemetery ;) Thank you for coming over!
