Sewing:
I got the red surcoat sewn together last night. There is more finishing to be done (hems, trims, buttons). I think we'll have some time on Sunday that I can spend (hopefully) finishing up both surcoats. Whee. I need to make a stop at Fabric Place on the way home tonight to get 9 yards of gold trim for both surcoats, 3 buttons for the red surcoat (hopefully I can find diamond shaped ones that have stars on them) and 3 clasps for the black surcoat. Then Brian can go to town painting the tree of Gondor on there :)
Planting:
There are more flowers popping up on the plant I put in on Sunday! Its a Dianthus "Spangled Star" . The flowers supposedly smell like cinnamon or clove, and it was ready to bloom, small, and low to the ground (also liked high sun/heat) so we thought it would be a good addition to the lawn. Here's a pic.
Now I want to clean up the little bed that's next to our garage. I'd love to put some echinachea there and some herbs but it gets mixed sun and shade. Suggestions? I'm not sure if there are herbs I could put in the ground at this point - its pretty late in the year, so I'm wondering if I should weed, mulch, and then start fresh next year. Here's the area I'm talking about.

Herbs and sun
Date: 2004-08-13 07:29 am (UTC)The problem is, I'm only home on the weekend and have been busy, so I haven't been able to fully monitor. The problem is its right next to a garage (so gets shade from that side at certain times) and is about 10 feet over from a massive tree (and gets shade from that side at other times). I'd be amazed if it got 6 hours (though I have to confirm).
Are the herbs you mention good in partial sun?
I didn't see any herbs at Mahoneys, and I'm assuming its too late to start from seed (or, should I throw seeds in the ground and hope for the best, or perhaps growing next year).
Thanks for all of your ongoing advice, its a huge help! My parents aren't necessarily what I'd call gardeners (keeping a spider plant alive is a challenge) so I haven't had a lot of experience with this sort of thing. :)
