My company is doing a charity drive, donate your old prom/bridesmaid dress for a girl to use at her prom (who otherwise couldn't afford one). You can help out too! Find info here http://www.antons.com/belle/ , at the drycleaner collecting the dresses.

I think that's great. You know, when I was a senior in HS I was in a teen-moms' program thru the public HS in Quincy. While we, as seniors or juniors, could have attended the 'regular' proms, most of us didn't have the cash to shell out for the tickets, dresses, tuxes for our dates, etc. Somehow one of the girls got in touch with someone else, and before we knew it we had a ton of used, donated dresses for each of us to choose from, a donated hall, a caterer donated their services, a tux rental places offered us huge discounts and my mom even went and bought each girl a rose and her date a bouteniere (sp?) and we had our own teen-moms' prom. It was amazing. And Iknow that if it hadn't been for the donations of everyone, especially the dresses, most of those girls would never have been able to experience a prom. I will never forget it. Ihope your company is able to generate a lot of donations. If I still had any of my old dresses I'd definitely donate!

That's awesome! Though my sister was involved in a teen mom program they didn't do anything like this, so she didn't get the prom experience.

I don't really have any formal gowns to donate. And my wedding gown is so obviously a wedding gown no one could wear it to a prom. ;)

I'm going to look into donating my wedding gown somewhere.

An idea I've also seen, was for people to have parts of the gown used for baby items (dresses, christening gowns) or saved for future generations (my cousin's gown had parts of both her mom's and my grandmothers).

I'm hanging on to mine. I could wear it again (since its a Rennie style, and not a traditional wedding dress), its just got to be somewhere that's not smokey or dirty. :)

Yeah, I don't know if I'm going to count on either a future daughter wanting to wear it or me feeling like paying someone to do something with it. we won't be having any christenings, so that's out. ;)

I'm wondering if they'd want to bother with the so dated early 90's dresses I have...

It is a great idea, though--I mean, I certainly had to go where there were huge sales to afford anything--all the stuff that went with the prom was a bit out of reach back then.

I'd say its worth a try. People go to the Garment District and buy things like that on purpose :)

Definitely! My mom and I made mine by altering a dress I wore in my aunt's wedding. It was awesome (and cost next to nothing since I had the materials already). I wish I knew what happened to it!

Good Idea

This is nice to see. Unfortunately I think my dresses are more than 3/4 years old and not probably what's "in" - they tend to be more longer, fuller, "romantic" ballgown style. Probably not what a young prom age girl would want to wear. Which is too bad since most of them are in really good condition and "plus sized" (which doesn't fit me anymore ;). I know bigger girrrls have a hard time finding cool dresses that don't look like sacks. :-/ Maybe I should contact them/bring them in anyways. Perhaps they donate the dresses that aren't used to charity. I'll look into it. ramble ramble talking out loud

I think its worth calling them (or bringing them in). Retro can be "in", after all :)

My prom dress was actually one I wore in a wedding that my mom and I ripped apart and refashioned to be more attractive (ala pretty in pink)! I wish I still had the thing, I have no clue what happened to it! :)

Yeah, I sent an email off to the organizer. I think I'll still will bring them in - they're doing no good in my closet and I haven't had the motivation to ebay them or anything.

To be perfectly honest, when someone is in serious need, they aren't super concerned with "trendy"...I know from experience. If you can donate, I think that would be awesome :)
