As the weather gets warmer I'm thinking more of making our outside property a nicer place to be and see. Last year I got the front yard in more order and we planted an herb garden in a small bed next to our garage. I also weeded, cleared out and mulched the area around a large tree in our back yard. This year we'll repair and paint our porches, get a nice, new patio set, and I'll tackle the other yard edge areas.

Brian is also getting a large Lilac bush for me, and having it planted somewhere smart (landscaper to be consulted) for my birthday (which isn't until late June, but planting should happen in the spring so he's already told me about it). We had Lilac at the house in Wellesley and I LOVED the smell, and had fun picking bunches to sit in drinking glass vases on the kitchen table or sills. Its nice to have a place now that is worth our while to stick things in the ground (versus in Framingham, where we knew we wouldn't be for the long haul).

I wonder, how well a LA plant would fare in New England. Princess Leia Iris anyone: http://www.starwars.com/kids/explore/reallife/f20060313/index.html ?

We've got a little side garden with a trellis and a jillian morning glories.

Call me a sap, but every summer morning I go out there to count the blossoms. I love it when there's too many to count. This year they kept blooming until October.

i picked up some hosta last weekend to plant. i love it so much and it's really pretty care free - unless you've got slugs.

congrats on the lilac - they're so wonderful. what color are you going for?

maybe you could get/make a greenhouse to house more delicate plants? (and/or maybe keep some hay mulch for the winters to protect more sensitive bulbs.) i've always wanted a greenhouse.

btw (i always miss this) the lyman estate's herb sale info:

I'm not sure who posted this, but ah well!

We have a bunch of hostas in the front and back yards. Its so bad, but I love popping the buds when they are just the right size to make that pop noise.

I'd like a purple lilac.

I'm not sure about the Lyman sale. We have a good amount of herbs and don't need anymore (there is also a great sale in Wellesley at Elm Reserve, I think Mother's Day weekend each year, whenever that is).

*inhales the imaginary scent deeply* I love lilacs! They are my absolute favorite!! Unfortunately, they don't grow well in pots on porches. *sniff*

I LOVE lilacs! I can't wait to have a big one right outside my bedroom or dining room window someday.
