HUUUUUGE TRACKS OF LAND!
Mar. 12th, 2007 03:56 pmAn interesting article about Waltham development that was in yesterday's Globe.

I'm really thankful that the behemoth in the works on the corner of Main and Moody was turned down http://www.dailynewstribune.com/homepage/8998998136609308671 . Something new there would be neat, but of that size would be awful to deal with (there's already a lack of parking in that area at night). I'm really curious to see what happens with the massive former Polaroid site, and how things change around 117/Rt. 20.
As usual, its interesting seeing such change coming to a city that when I was a kid was a total dump where some people were kind of scared to spend their time. Waltham in the grand scheme of things has seen great change, but most only see a small snapshot of a town. Its neat to be a part of something like that, and I'm curious where it will make us end up.

Date: 2007-03-12 09:13 pm (UTC)I normally can't go to those meetings, because they are usually on Tuesday nights (and I have dance class). I'm not sure what it is the city likes about Tuesdays, because their historical society meetings also fall on Tuesdays (I'm a member, but I can never go actually see any of their demonstrations).

Date: 2007-03-12 09:02 pm (UTC)Which is ironic, considering I grew up in Dorchester, yet my grandparents had exactly that opinion of Waltham. Plus it was "way out" Stupid sexy toy store.
I mean I know now there are parts of pretty much every town you don't want to go into. When I tell people I grew up in Dorchester and they go Ewwwww, I think about how it's OK near the irish pubs *grins* but not OK the closer you get to Boston via Dorchester Ave.
I have a very un-PC statement I make about where certain people in Dorchester live, but that's from my experience with the neighborhood - I certainly wouldn't want to live there. I'm not talking out of my ass. There are parts of Dorchester I just wouldn't buy into, you know?
Weird.
(on a side note, there's something I want you to look at, not at work. Go to You Tube, and you either have be signed in or I found one not locked down by age restrictions. It's NSFW. Do a search for "Kylie Minogue agent provocateur" And hold down your husband. *shivers*)
Bad towns
Date: 2007-03-12 09:19 pm (UTC)Tee hee. OK, Waltham was a dump *except for* that store. And Outer Limits (who is moving down the street into a larger space soon, by the way).

And I've met people that grew up in Dorchester as fiercely protective of it as the crazy Walthamites. I wonder if its something about the demographics? I haven't met many residents of say, Wellesley, that are so fiercely defensive of it (or proud of it for that matter either). I'm just picking on Wellesley, since that's where I first lived as a kid, and from where my parents ran screaming. :)

As for me in Waltham. For a while though, I was getting kind of desperate. There are 2 streets in particular I always said I'd never live, but we rented right off one of them (though we were on "the good end") and we looked at a house that was for sale around the corner from our old apartment too.
I guess its all relevant. Compared to some places in say, India, the nastiest, scariest neighborhood in Boston (or Lawrence, or Brockton, or NOLA) are the Taj Mahal! :)

Oh my. That was very - nice.
