NYC

So - we're going to NYC this weekend (sorry Fieryredhead - I won't be able to go to the Hafla with you). Its been on my mind a lot lately and I'd like to go to see it before the towers of light are gone.

I found a place in Jersey City that AAA recommended that's convenient (across the street from the Path) and cheap ($70 per night for two people) - its right near the Holland Tunnel. They have continental breakfast included, they have microwaves and refrigerators in the room and we're getting a king sized bed too. Wheee! So Friday after work we'll be heading to uncharted territory and trying our hand at finding our way around NYC on the subway (hmmm, wondering if I should pick up a Frommer's NYC book).

Any inexpensive suggestions of things to do (that you haven't mentioned already)?

Hee hee, in all of my anal-retentiveness I've never done anything this spontaneous before :)

First, be VERY alert. Staralfurinn lives about a 10 minute walk from that PATH station in Jersey City, and while it didn't make me nervous, per se, she wouldn't let me walk alone after the Cruxshadows, and it's not exactly the nicest neighborhood. I'd eqate it to Central Square about 10 years ago.

I have a couple of maps, both available locally, that are incredible. One is a transit map or the subway/bus routes, and one is a driving map. Both are about the size of a legal sheet of paper, and they're laminated (so you can get them all sticky *evil grin*) Felt like a tourist, but it was OK, I didn't get lost. The key one was called Streetwise Manhattan, and I loved it so much I got the Streetwise Atlanta for Dragoncon, and it was Just as helpful.

Next time I got I'd love to hit some museums, I've only been in the Museum of Natural History. That was a hair on the expensive side, like a $10 admission, as I recall, but we also went to a Jurassic Park Exhibit. I'd been hearing about the Cloisters too, but again, never made it. Let me drop a line to Starafurinn, she'd know way better.

Kazama and I lived out of that Fromer's book, that's how we found the great noodle place we went to, and the little Japanese store where he got that awesome kimono. Well worth the price. I can loan you all these things if you wanted, instead of buying them, save you about $20-30 which you can do other stuff with.

All I can tell you is the BatCave *lol*, and I know there's somewhere else S goes. That's how i usually spend my nights in NYC, then sleeping most of the day. Or shopping. Hmmmmm. Shopping.

OOOOh - the book and maps would be really neat if you're willing to lend them! Just let me know when I can grab them from you (either meet you somewhere or come out to your place - I don't want to make you treck out to Waltham just for that) :)

As far as the safety thing - I'm not expecting it to be cushy. From what I can tell the Path is right across the street from the Hotel (and I've ridden the Path once before, aside from some 'interesting' people on the train all was fine).

Heh.
The one thing I remember vividly, was walking through the parking lot of the commuter parking and the sheer number of Rats everywhere, just out in the open. It bothers Staralfurinn terribly. They "rustle".

As long as it's clean. It may be a viable option for me. I want to go visit her after tax season, but I don't want to take up room in her apartment, she has a tiny place and a new boyfriend. The TMI alone......

No problem, I actually pulled everything out to post the last time. I have Tember's stuff almost ready, so as long as I just "drop" by, since I have scads of stuff to do at home, I can kill two birds, so to speak. Maybe tonight, let me look and get back to you.
I have to stop at home and get your DVD's, I'm SO PISSED at Evangelion. Grrrrr. I want it out of my house. *lol*

I didn't really get into the "abbreviated" movie, I was watching End of last night.
I may ask to keep that one, to watch what I didn't.
All I know is I'm HIGHLY unsatisified, and we know how bad that can be. *evil grin*

We're staying at the Holland Motor Lodge if you want to try and book a room at the same place as us . . . you should be able to find information about it on AAA.com (though, you may need a login and password to get to it).

stop in at one of the big bookstores or a rand mcnally store and pick up a little foldable subway/bus guide. it too is laminated, and has all the stops marked out. big plus is that it's very subtle so you don't seem like a big tourist w/a map! hehe.

also pick up a new yorker magazine - has good listings of all the museum/gallery shows. or if you want to wait, stop in at a gallery in soho or somewhere and grab a free Gallery Guide. it's organized by location.

don't forget to check pollstar.com to see if there are any good shows to see!

have a blast! & remember, it's saint patrick's day weekend. you'll be milling about seas of drunken green people along the parade routes. :) it's not so bad really (keeps the museums empty unless it rains.)

You know, I totally forgot that St. Patrick's Day was this weekend (guessing it would be a crazy time to go to St. Patrick's Cathedral but I still want to try).

i heard mention of a surrealist exhibit ongoing on at the met i think -

Tapping The Vein on Saturday at the Batcave (aka buttcave or ratcave). bands play before 10pmish to 12 and then dancing from 12-4. i had a great time when i went, i hadn't been in ages and it was completely done over - there are two levels, gothand synthpop upstairs and synthpop...trance...techno downstairs.

of course there is probably more going on, but this was off the top of my head. no shortage of things to do!

you will have sooo much fun! Oh, and when you are in St marks (assuming you are going shopping there, if you go to the end of the street (the one with all the cool shops, think its st marks street) and turn right, you'll see a japanese anime toy store (which is cool) BUT even better, just before the store is the worlds greatest french fry store. They have like 30 toppings and the fries are heavenly.
