For those crafty people out there, does anyone know of a good source for beads? I'm looking for cheap crystal-looking ones (teeny ones, and teardrop ones).

Also, any tips on what kind of wire works well for crown making? I'm going to be trying to make a decent Arwen Ceremonial Crown from Return of the King - for pix go here and scroll to the bottom: http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Elf/Arwen/Green.htm

Thanks in advance!

The bead shop across the street from Fire & Ice in Harvard square is pretty good.

What are you two crazies doing this weekend?

They have a lot of nice stuff, but are more pricy than I'm hoping for with these.

"What are you two crazies doing this weekend?"

As always, too much stuff :)

For beads, go to either Jo-Ann Fabrics or A.C. Moore. Their beads are under $2.00 a bag...and for wire, I would go with steel wire like 14 gauge (I think) for the thickness and sturdiness of it. Hope that helps!

playtime in arlington center has bunches of beads in the basement and also has some little rhinestones on wires for tiara making. (as well as headbands & combs & wire such)

go out broadway in somerville from teele square towards arlington. cross rt. 16 and keep going until the light just before you enter arlington center. playtime is on the right at the corner.

(actually, looking at the picture, you may want to get wire from pearl or some of the other art stores that carry a heavier guage wire. maybe even a hardware store.)

i'm replying to myself as i thought of another place to inquire - mass art has a jewelrymaking class so if you called over there, perhaps they could steer you in the direction of their supplier. (i think boston and cambridge centers for adult ed also have classes.)

I'd get aluminum sheets -- no clue what guage (16?), you'd have to see what's got enough give to be bendable but still strong enough to hold a shape -- from Home Depot and CUT OUT the designs, almost like making a STENCIL. Bend it around a fake head, a model of yours preferably ;-> Then bop the hammered look into it with a really small round ballpeen hammer.

Be sure to file the edges, or run a bead of solder on it, to avoid cuts.

Thanks! I was thinking of them because years ago when Brian was still making chainmail he went in on an order of beads with Columbine (I knew their name was something Mountain, but couldn't remember what) :)
