Now I can obsess about the fun details.
Moving, paint colors and stuff for sale:
First off - pencil us in! We'll need help loading boxes into a truck on the eve of Tuesday June 29 (my birthday, btw). We'll need help unloading boxes from the truck at the new house on Wed June 30. Furniture - we're hoping to leave to the pros . . . so it should be an easy move.
The last time we moved it was stupid hot and humid out (it was June 28, 2002). Afterwards we caravaned to my parents house to go swimming, and my Dad bought everyone Chinese Food. This time if we want we could WALK to my parent's house to take a dip. :)
I know its the middle of the week and all - but it doesn't hurt to ask for help :)
****
We decided that though it would be nice to just move in - white walls are boring. Painting though shouldn't take long. Originally we wanted to paint the same colors as the place in Framingham, but the rooms are so small that I'm not sure how dark colors will work. Ideas? For reference, our living room was a garnet/burgandy color (with forest green living room set) and the dining room had deep royal blue walls. We'd either do these colors or lighter ones that complement them.
As to room arrangement, we still haven't figured out what we want to do. We're trying to decide what bedroom to use for a bedroom :). I've decided I want to get a Lane Hope chest and even picked out the type I want from their website . . . it would store a lot of stuff and would let me stop using a small bureau I have. I have no clue what they cost though.

-Antique Dining room set (not a fancy antique, but still antique - a bit beat up but fits a lot - cherry veneer finish but is pine underneath), $250

Date: 2004-04-30 11:42 am (UTC)I like the alternating color thing . . . I'm just not sure how much I like it with a dark and a light color.
Brian mentioned the size thing last night. In the living room there's not much wall space at all (1 side is mostly window, 1 side is open to dining room, 1 side has french doors to hallway. The dining room - its got the one open wall to the living room and one wall that's mostly windows.
We have a lot of time to figure it out. I just want to figure it out before moving so we can get the painting over with early. I'll be taking my vacation then (2 weeks - wow) so I'm hoping to get the rooms painted (the 3 we're doing) and get unpacked in that time. Heh, we could even have a 4th of July cookout and then walk down to the fireworks :)

Date: 2004-04-30 11:44 am (UTC)Thank you so much (and, thank J for me too)! Dates could shift so I don't want to go nuts planning now . . . but at the moment its looking like emptying the house on Tuesday, moving in on Wednesday (we'd have the keys at around 11:00 AM we think) would be the way to go.

Date: 2004-04-30 11:41 am (UTC)As for the colors, we painted our living room/dining room with two dark walls (the facing walls) and then a shade of white (swiss coffee, Behr, for reference) and it came out really nice. I highly reccoemend it as a method of bringing color into a room without overwhelming it.
Paint
Date: 2004-04-30 11:47 am (UTC)Thanks! Also, I'd love to come help you guys out with Sprout or just around the house - whatever you need. I'll be out of school so I'll have a lot more free time then.

Cool, thanks! A friend of mine did something similar in her house in Rockport (I helped her with a couple of weekends ago) - the nook near the window facing the East was painted a couple of shades ligher than the rest of the room. It looked very nice. I'm not a pink fan at all, but I wonder if a burgandy with a pale, pale, almost white complementary pink would work well. The dining room - a blue with a pale, compelentary almost white blue?
Hrm.
Our bedroom will be the same as it is now - I love that damn color! :)

Date: 2004-05-03 08:14 am (UTC)Wow! Cool! I am sure we will be willing to take help/food/company that does not cry or need its diaper changed, etc. :)
"colors...."
I recomend that you not only consider colors a few shades lighter, but also that you consider neutral whites for the off color. We painted our living room a burgundy color (red currant) and we made the other walls a warm white that was not pink at all (swiss coffee) and it works pretty well. We both hate pink and so knocked that right out of contention.
It might actually be a pretty neat thing to keep the white color the same across the living room/dining room/etc and change the saturated color. It might tie the rooms together a bit.

Date: 2004-04-30 11:56 am (UTC)How tall are the ceilings? You could put up some sort of wainscot and paint that dark, leaving the walls a lighter color (which can make a room seem taller)... Or do a single wall in a room a dark color and leave the rest lighter but the same hue -- see how the light enters the room before you decide on the dark wall, 'cause you'll want the sunlight hitting a lighter wall. Or if you have dormer windows you could paint 'em a tint of the wall color to subtly add more light (where did I get that idea? :)
One thing I love about the color we used in our bedroom was that it was a strong color but was not dark per se -- it's intense but does not make a small room seem smaller.
Let me know when you start painting; I should be done with my own stuff by then (I hope, anyhow!).
Painty goodness
Date: 2004-04-30 12:02 pm (UTC)Awesome :)
"How tall are the ceilings?"
Maybe 8 feet? Not too low, not too high.
"You could put up some sort of wainscot and paint that dark, leaving the walls a lighter color (which can make a room seem taller)"
It sounds nice, but I don't think would be a good idea. Most of the walls will be obstructed by furniture :)
"... Or do a single wall in a room a dark color and leave the rest lighter but the same hue -- see how the light enters the room before you decide on the dark wall, 'cause you'll want the sunlight hitting a lighter wall."
That's what I'm thinking.
" Or if you have dormer windows you could paint 'em a tint of the wall color to subtly add more light (where did I get that idea? :)"
Heh, we don't have any dormer windows. We do however, have a couple of bay windows. I'm wondering if that would be the good wall to be the light one. Or perhaps that wall and the one opposite it (i.e. the opening to the dining room).
"One thing I love about the color we used in our bedroom was that it was a strong color but was not dark per se -- it's intense but does not make a small room seem smaller."
The one in our living room is definitely dark - we like it, but our living room now is huge - the one in Waltham isn't :)
"Let me know when you start painting; I should be done with my own stuff by then (I hope, anyhow!)."
I'll be thinking of it soon, though not getting paint till right around when we move. We'll only be doing 3 rooms and a teeny, tiny bathroom and won't be painting trim (its all white, and can just stay that way for all I care).
Whee!

Date: 2004-04-30 12:08 pm (UTC)WRT your comment about wall space earlier, I have the same problem in my house. It's nearly impossible to find a wall that doesn't have some odd arrangement of doors, light switches, windows, registers etc... So far, I think that I've done a pretty good job organizing stuff, but every time I try to re-organize rooms I realize that there is one and only one way to arrange the furniture without blocking doorways/windows (this is one reason I still haven't figured out what to do about wall decorations either).
Anyways, good luck moving etc... Glad to see it all came together.
Walls
Date: 2004-04-30 12:28 pm (UTC)That sounds like a neat idea - perhaps for the dining room.
The living room will be so packed with stuff you won't see much of the lower part of the walls at all! As it is, we're trying to figure out if our massive entertainment center will need to block the opening to the dining room (in the dining room, we'd have curtains hanging in that doorway to hide the ugly wires and such. It would just fit to the left of the doorway with one shelf unit next to it (to fit stereo components). It would look kind of off balanced though, with the other shelving unit (meant to be on the other side of the center part) on the other side of the room.
Its OK, these kinds of problems are much easier to deal with than the previous ones we've faced :)

We only paid $400 for it (to a woman we found on Craigslist that had a Great Aunt who was the original owner). We planned to refinish it, but the table is kind of wobly, and we didn't realize it was laquer. Still, its really functional and not too bad looking. I hope we can find someone to take it.

Date: 2004-04-30 01:59 pm (UTC)As far as painting goes, I have a CD around here with a program that lets you use digital pics of the actual rooms to paint different colors (at leat I think that's what it does, I never used it). If you are interested I can try to dig it up.
If you are considering a mixture of dark and light walls, don't limit yourself to the same color only lighter. We went with a saturated red and the lighter color is not in the red family at all and we like how it came out. We were not interested in having pink walls, so the accent is a neutral off white in the cream family and it works.
Moving
Date: 2004-04-30 02:21 pm (UTC)I would LOVE any boxes you have - in 2 weeks I'll have loads more free time and could get whatever is free (and, finally see your place, and a very round you!) :)
And as I told Avon, I'd love to help you guys out after the birth too . . . either in house stuff or casseroles or giving respite from the baby. Again, I won't be in school (yay!) so I'll have loads more time.

Don't worry about it :) We don't have great pics of the rooms. Usually I'm able to visualize things. Time and again people think I'm nuts when I suggest things and when its all done they think, wow!, that's neat.

That sounds like a good idea . . . a burgandy on one wall, cream on others, and forest green couches would be very complementary.
